Growing Balloon

Introduction

With the help of a balloon and some liquid nitrogen, we can easily explain the concept of expanding gasses while they evaporate.

Description of the Experiment

First we fix an Y-tube, a glass as big as a shotglass with two exits, onto a standard. We attach the balloon to one of the exits, and then we pour some liquid nitrogen into the Y-tube. The other exits is closed with a cork, so the gasseous nitrogen can only escape into the balloon, so the balloon grows.

Safety Information

* Standard LN2 safety issues * Y-tube can fall and break on the ground, spilling liquid nitrogen * Standard low temperature safety
